     Fix for Volley 1.0a4

Somehow the server got linked to the wrong version of libxml and would not run (unless you happened to have that version installed somewhere on your system, which I did). This has been fixed, and a new version has been uploaded under the same version number.

     Volley 1.0a4

On the outside, Volley 1.0a4 has just one new feature: the ability to read news posts with a web browser. There are various internal changes, but this feature is still significant because it demonstrates the protocol adapter concept, which is one of the most important features in Volley. Protocol adapter plugins will add Hotline compatibility, a potentially rich web interface, and a huge number of other possibilities.

     Backtracking

Amidst this flurry of Icon Machine activity, I decided that I really ought to go back and do a Volley release with the HTTP plugin, especially since I will soon be doing my thesis defense (Volley being my thesis project) and it would be good for the people in the audience to be able to go home and try it out. This means updating the Carbon client, since the Cocoa client isn’t far enough along for such a release, but in the course of working on the Cocoa client I made some changes to the generic client code for which the Carbon client needed to be updated. Then I got back to the problem of the /status command not working, which seems to actually be a server problem.

Long story short, version 1.0a4 should be out within the next week. I had forgotten how long it’s been since the last release, until I was transferring log entries over from the forum the other day. It’s amazing how the time has gone by.

     3.0.1 vs 3.1

I’m waiting for the updated Japanese translation before I release a finalized version of 3.0.1, though if that takes much longer I might skip 3.0.1 entirely and go straight to 3.1. I’ve been working on getting the prefs window to work right in OS 9 - or rather, in the Classic environment, since I no longer have a machine that can run the real thing. There are a couple of odd problems, but I’m sure glad nibs work in CarbonLib.

Version 3.1 will be the last release that is compatible with OS 9. After that, I’m going to clean out all of the “do this in OS 9 and that in OS X” stuff that’s been cluttering things up. I think I’ll also take another shot at the transparent icon background that I started a while back - in addition to white, black, checker, etc., this will make the backgrounds transparent so you can preview them over anything you want. I almost had it working before, except I didn’t want mouse clicks to go through the transparent parts.

And now that I’m getting back into the groove, I could use some beta testers. E-mail me if you’re interested.

     Action figure grumbles

I just went out and bought one of the action figures from the upcoming The Batman cartoon (which unavoidably reminds me of The Cheat), having managed to find the one figure that’s actually “normal” - standard black-and-gray coloring, no funky Neon Arctic Action Deluxe nonsense. Got home, opened it up, and found that the Batarang launcher can’t be removed from Batman’s hand; it’s actually designed as a permanent part of the figure. Argh.

Then there are the new Justice League 4-packs just coming out. One of them has Aquaman and repaints of Superman, The Flash, and Green Lantern. The other has Darkseid and repaints of Superman, Wonder Woman, and Green Lantern. Repaints are useless, so essentially it’s $20 each for Aquaman and Darkseid. I don’t see that happening. But at least I managed to find the Ultra Humanite figure, which surprisingly is sold by itself. If only I could find the Darkseid figure on its own. Sure, I could pay upwards of $30 for one of these (or Hawkgirl) online, but that’s proportionally even less likely than one of those mostly-useless 4-packs. If at least two out of the four were interesting, I’d go for it; I found Hasbro’s first few 4-packs to be worthwhile. But things have gone downhill since then.

On a side note, I wonder if they’ll make an action figure of the new Sisko-style shaved-head-and-goatee Green Lantern…

     Preferences

Looks like I’m back on track with Icon Machine. If I get no complaints, I’ll finalize version 3.0.1 - it will be nothing but a version change, so if you already have it you don’t need to re-download.

Meanwhile, I’m working on the preferences dialog for 3.1. Nothing too fancy, and I finally settled on not using tabs or anything since there aren’t that many options. This will also be the first nib-based dialog, as opposed to the PowerPlant stuff used for everything else. This will be the beginning of a transition away from PowerPlant, since I don’t plan to buy any more CodeWarrior upgrades (I’m still using CW 8 ). The other windows will slowly be replaced with nib versions too, and at the same time I’ll work on migrating towards Quartz for all the graphics stuff.

Of course I’ll also need some actual new features, as opposed to just internal changes, to make the upgrades interesting. Exporting Windows icons is always a popular suggestion; ideally I would make them editable on par with Mac icons, rather than just importing/exporting them. The Quartz transition will also open up some possibilities with anti-aliased drawing and stuff.

     Oops

I was afraid something like this might happen. Due to some kind of mix-up, I accidentally posted Icon Machine version 3.0b12 instead of 3.0.1b1. This has been corrected.

I was wondering why the file was so much smaller.

     Icon Machine 3.0.1b1

I am releasing a minor update to Icon Machine, mainly to fix a cosmetic issue in OS X 10.3. This will be a public beta release for about a week, after which it will become final if no major problems are found. Download version 3.0.1b1 here.
