Good points, Croc and Uncommon.

What will happen when the gas tax holiday is over? People will accuse the president of "raising taxes" on gas. I call that a lose-lose situation, not to mention that our highways and roads need all the help they can get. Losing 10 billion dollars doesn't seem like a good idea--that's one expensive holiday.

I agree. I suggest that a long-term solution might be to decrease demand for the by-product of cenozoic plant materials. Perhaps cellulosic or algal fuels would be a good place to start.

Also, I would like to point out that Hillary Clinton will actually be helping the oil companies because the lower cost of gas will increase demand, which leads to more profits for the oil companies. I'm not sure why she doesn't understand that. Oh wait, she probably does, but is just baiting for votes or for an 'elitist' sound bite from Obama. In the spirit of long-term, I would ask Clinton what would happen after the gas tax holiday is over? What will she do to alleviate the gas tax hangover from prices that suddenly jump 50 cents a gallon due to the tax returning and increased price from increased demand and stagnant supply?

Here is my motto for her: "Vote for Clinton: pay cents/gallon less this summer, pay 75 cents/gallon more this fall!"

One last point: If Clinton is so set on Democratic Party principles, why is she aligned with McCain on this one? Is McCain coming to his Democratic senses?

It wasn't really a debate; it was more like a Mickey Mouse press conference. (ABC is owned by Disney.) And Stephanopoulos' involvement in the Clinton campaign and administration created the strong perception of conflict of interest, a priori. Given his role in the debacle, er debate, I think there's more than a perception of his Clinton partisanship.

If there's a silver lining to this cloud, it's in the public backlash against ABC by the WaPo et al.

Disclosure: I've supported Obama since Edwards dropped out of the race. (Who I supported after Kucinich dropped out.)

Yes! How fun! I'd love to see the idols singing parodies. Perhaps they could do a Weird Al style video for the weekly Ford commercial. Sometimes they get too serious.

I love the metaphor of hacking at leaves. I'll excuse the near pun on my maiden name, since I like the image so well.

I'll be interested to see how much violence there is at the next (and most likely, last) debate. The candidates attack each other when they're on the campaign trail, but not in person. I hope there's no hacking at each other.

I like your point that the failings of the followers does not show that the institution itself is corrupt or inherently unworkable. As you said, people do things and say it for another cause. Hinkley shot Ronald Reagan for Jodie Foster--that doesn't make Jodie Foster a bad actress or a bad person. It makes the man look criminally insane.

Im' struck by the thought that your idea applies to the two-party system in politics. I get tired of the rhetoric and name-calling, but I don't blame the two-party system. I blame human nature. We are a mix of good and evil and we have to figure out which part of ourselves will prevail.
